What is an undermount sink?
An undermount sink is mounted beneath a solid surface worktop such as granite, Corian or timber. They make any kitchen look clean, minimalistic and tidy.
There is no sink ledge placed on top of the work surface. This makes an undermount sink easier to clean. After preparing food, if any crumbs are left on the work top you can simply wipe them away into the sink.
Can an undermount sink be installed in a laminate worktop?
An undermount sink can only be installed into a solid work surface. Granite, quartz, corian, concrete and solid wood surfaces can be used when fitting an undermount sink.
Laminate or tiled work surfaces are not suitable as the sink is installed under the surface of the worktop. When you cut out the hole for the sink the wooden core of the worktop is exposed. This area would become damp, causing the worktop to warp over time.
Is the lack of a draining board an issue on an undermount sink?
The majority of homes that have an undermount sink have drainer grooves cut into the solid worksurface. These can be added by a professional kitchen fitter at the time of fitting or prior to installation at the work top manufacturing plant. It depends on the work top substrate you choose.
Drainer grooves carved into the work top look stylish and blend into the work surface for a minimalist finish.
Stainless Steel Undermount Sinks.
Stainless steel undermount sinks come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit your needs. If you're after some glamour in your kitchen then why not opt for a gold undermount sink! With single, double and one and a half bowl options available you'll have no problem finding one to suit your lifestyle.
Stainless steel sinks are available in a straight or rounded profile. The straight angled profile sinks have right angled corners. In order to achieve this the sink is welded together and therefore each side retains a consistent thickness throughout. Straight sided basins look amazing in modern kitchens, you'll just need to be extra vigilant at cleaning the corners!
A rounded basin sink has a softer aesthetic and are easier to clean as the corners are curved. Most manufacturers use a single press technique where they strech the stainless steel around a mould. This proceedure will reduce the thickness of the material in certain areas but modern techniques will still create a durable and lovely looking sink.
All our stainless steel sinks are made from superior quality 18/10 chrome nickel steel which is metallurgical incapable of rusting or corroding in normal household conditions. Any rust marks will likely be from cast iron cooking utensils or wire wool that has been left to sit in your damp basin for a while. Simply clean the sink with a soft cloth and a stainless steel cleaner to remove the superficial stains.
Granite Undermount Sinks
Granite undermount sinks are chic and sturdy, perfect for those who are looking to add style to their kitchen. They are available in a range of colours so it is easy to find one to compliment or contrast with your worktop and furniture doors.
The great thing about composite granite sinks is their durability. Manufacturers combine a mix of granite particles and acrylic resin which creates a hard wearing substrate. The composition of granite sinks varies between sink manufacturer's so it is always worth checking before you decide which one to go for.
Composite granite sinks are virtually scratch resistant and can resist high temperatures. They have a naturally hygienic, antibacterial finish and are easy to clean.
They are available in double, single and one and a half bowl options too. A great choice for modern living
Ceramic Undermount Sinks
Ceramic undermount sinks offer a touch of the traditional mixed with a modern design. Classic ceramic glazed sinks situated in wooden worktops give a country feel to those not necessarily wanting a Belfast sink. If situated under solid granite work tops or quartz they offer a welcome contrast in colour and texture.
Ceramic sinks are hard wearing and their non porous, smooth surface makes them very easy to wipe clean. Colour choice is limited to ivory, white and in rare instances you'll find black ceramic sinks. The classic white is still by far the most popular choice.
If you plan to install a ceramic sink in your kitchen we would highly recommend placing a removable sink mat or wire rack to the base of the sink. This will help to reduce breakages when washing up or if something accidentally falls into the sink.
